Agathos acquires Vacgen, a specialist manufacturer of ultra-high vacuum chambers and associated components
Agathos are pleased to announce the completion of the acquisition of Vacgen Limited (“Vacgen”) from the Scientia Scientific AB(“Scientia”), a Swedish based group engaged in the development of Ultra High Vacuum (“UHV”) research and analysis equipment.
Agathos have partnered with a strong management team comprising existing senior management supplemented by a new Chairman and Managing Director.
Vacgen is a market leading and globally recognised manufacturer of UHV chambers, components and manipulation devices used in advanced scientific research. Vacgen was a pioneer in the UHV industry, undertaking and developing the very first UHV research and equipment in the 1960’s. UHV components are used for applications where extreme cleanliness is required in a manufacturing process (such as the semi-conductor industry) or where scientific processes require a complete vacuum to be effective. Vacgen manufactures and distributes the complete spectrum of UHV chambers and components, from basic gaskets and flanges to complete turnkey assemblies, employing approximately 80 people.
Albert Farrant, Senior Partner at Agathos who led the acquisition:
“Agathos are very excited to be part of the next stage in Vacgen’s evolution and growth. Our investment, and the focus that it will bring, will allow Vacgen to continue to improve its service offering to its OEM and catalogue customers globally and to accelerate its growth ambitions to meet strong demand in its end markets. There will be a renewed focus on investing in research and development activities with the aim of developing the next generation of UHV products and further consolidating Vacgen’s position as thebest recognized brand in thisfast-growing global niche. We are backing the existing management team who have made significant progress in integrating the businesses and implementing operational excellence alongside a high caliber MBI team. Together we are all very excited about the opportunity to significantly drive sales growth on a global scale”
Prior to the divestment, Scienta successfully re-positioned Vacgen to focus on its core UHV and componentry business, including discontinuing activities that were a distraction from the core offering. Vacgen recently relocated into a brand-new purpose-built facility in Halisham, East Sussex which allows best in class manufacturing practices and provides ample capacity for growth.
The Agathos team will provide financial, strategic and operational support to the Vacgen management team. Peter Williamson will join as Chairman and brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in growing businesses, including Agathos portfolio company Cargostore Worldwide Trading. Patricio Lacalle will join as Managing Director. Patricio has an exceptional track record of leading operational improvement and sales growth as CEO / MD of larger companies with similar dynamics to Vacgen.
